Aztec Angels donate gifts to Salvation Army

By Ariana Contreras

The season of giving is here and for the past 12 years the school strived to make a difference in the community with the project Aztec Angels.

Each year, teachers and students adopt disadvantaged children from the Salvation Army to provide them with gifts and clothes, making their Christmas a little better.

“I think we get so caught up with Christmas and gifts and shopping that we forget what the true meaning of the holiday is,” said senior Briana Lopez.

Every homeroom is asked to adopt a child from the shared Excel document on Aztec Gold, the student news website. Teams, staff members and organizations are also welcome to adopt an angel.

“I’ve always had everything I’ve needed,” said senior Rupert Ruiz. “All my needs were guaranteed so I wanted to at least give back to someone.”

One thing that’s different from this year than all the past years is that instead of just donating a toy everyone is asked to donate two pieces of clothing as well.

“We’re so fortunate that we can sometimes take things for granted,” said senior Cristina Fabela. “Sure a toy helps bring joy, but we forgot that there are kids out there who don’t even own a sweater for the winter time and that’s what really matters.”

All gifts should be turned into the Student Council room unwrapped by Dec. 7. Make sure the tag stating the name of the child is attached to the gifts.
