Two soccer athletes sign with universities

By Ariana Contreras

This past Wednesday, two Aztecs had the opportunity to commit to universities on National Signing Day with the dream of continuing their soccer career on a collegiate level.

Surrounded by teammates, family and friends, senior Jacquelyn Soto signed with UTEP and senior Omar Salmon signed with the University of the Southwest in Hobbs, New Mexico during a ceremony in the theater.

“I verbally committed back in December. It was definitely emotional and I was just really excited,” Soto said.

Soto and Salmon have a passion for soccer that has been instilled in them since a very young age. It was in high school that they were able to discover their true capabilities.

“Success in the future is all that I could think about, expecting big things from here on out,” Salmon said.

Having been captain for three years, Soto has had the drive to always be the best that she can be, making her path to college soccer a bit easier.

“I’ve always been very competitive, so when coach saw that passion in me and made me captain it felt great,” Soto said.

Although the pair may have already committed to their colleges, it doesn’t mean that they’re going to take a break and slow down.

“I expect this season to be lifted and to get back on that winning record,” Salmon said.
