New marquee gives school a fresh look

By Ariana Arredondo, Aztec Gold Editor-In-Chief

The old, broken marquee has received a makeover. Now the black and red screen has been replaced with a flashy, yellow temple design with fun, new graphics.

“The marquee displays the calendar of events, important information from admin and anything important going on around the school,” Director of Student Activities Theresa Maya said.

Any club is able to advertise on the marquee simply by emailing Maya at [email protected]. Just like the morning announcements, clubs and sports can request that events and activities are displayed.

The marquee had to be changed because it was beginning to feel the wear and tear of displaying over 10 years of Aztec news. The flashing lights and screen were in urgent need of replacement.

A recently-enacted city ordinance required that the new marquee be much shorter than the old one. According to Maya, this was discouraging at first because the student body had planned to build a large, elaborate marquee to represent the school. In the end, the design firm was able to come up with a sign that emphasized the school identity of Aztec culture.

“We would’ve loved to go bigger, but the city didn’t give us the permit for it,” Maya said.

Students can thank the classes of 2018, 2017 and 2016 for this new installment as they helped to pay for its construction. The money came from their “class gift,” which is an account of funds that allows each graduating class to give the school an object as a form of remembrance.
